Is This The Real Life?

Is this the real life, is this just fantasy?  Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality.  Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see.
(Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen.)

I saw this article on Yahoo today Young People Crave Self Esteem Above Sex: Study

Is anyone really surprised by this?  (I guess the researchers were...)

We have become a culture of "It's all about me."

Texting, Facebook, blogs...everyone has fallen into this narcissistic trap.

I believe this has come about because we have 24-7 access to everything and everybody.  A virtual world if you will.

I don't own a cell phone.  I don't want one.  (This drives SM crazy, I think more from a safety point of view than from anything else.)

I hate phones.  I hate talking on them. (Right Mom?)

I don't have a facebook page.  Don't want one.

I have a land line at home and when I'm at work I use theirs.  If I have a breakdown in the car I use the nice person's phone who stops and asks me if I need help.  (Trust me, it's happened.)

I personally believe that we are, in a way, becoming MORE isolated in our efforts to get ourselves out into that virtual world.

Personal interaction is on the decline.  People don't know how to deal with each other face to face.  It's easier to say "text me" or "email me."

I've noticed this myself.  (SM has definitely noticed it..."You're blogging again?")

I started this blog as a sort of journal.  Someplace to have pictures and thoughts that I could go back and read like the old photo albums we used to keep.  I guess the new version of that is "scrap-booking".

But I've noticed that I get a thrill looking at my view counter, my Google Friends Connect, my stat page.

"Hey, people are actually interested in what I have to say."

I've fallen into the trap.

(Damn...I have to get ready for work...Sigh.  Real life, not fantasy.)

  1. I have a friend who will only text me, she will never call me on the phone. She knows I hate it. And she is no kid at 36! What kind of society do we live in that you can't have contact without a machine. Good for you going against the grain.

  2. I saw that on the news last night too. I was at least happy to hear that the 'researchers' said that the praise should be for real and not empty parental praise. What a concept!

No Facebook here either and I HATE texting! I too have a friend who will only text me, drives me NUTS and when I tell her just to call me, she never will, wont answer when I call and then she emails me instead. Low and loud growls....

And yes, we love hearing what you have to say!

  3. I don't text, my cell phone is in my car and I only use the car a couple times a month (I had over 20messages that I left unanswered), use my land line to collect messages (I return those calls), I do have a Face Book page: it's how I communicate with the teenage grand kids and a few buddys from high school. The truth is I love email. I got used to it when I was selling real estate and now it's the only way I want to communicate...drives a couple of my gf crazy...

  4. Oh, so YOU'RE the other person in the world not on Facebook. And here I thought I was the only one.
I HATE HATE HATE cellphones and texting. My dream is to open a restaurant that doesn't allow them. And if they sneak them in? I get to smash em with a huge mallet. Ah, fantasies!!! My kingdom for ONE MEAL OUT that isn't interrupted by some inane (and very loud) conversation at the next table..........

  5. I'm Tami's Mom. I live fulltime in a motorhome. I have to have a cell. The cord doesn't reach :) I also have facebook because my kids are so busy with their lives I'm lucky if I get to talk to them. As for the grandkids it's the only way I hear about their lives
