"BATTLE!"

I have a nice 4 day weekend coming up.  With the weather breaking a bit, (only in the upper 80's) my thoughts are easily turning to fall.  And the fall garden.  But before I can even consider planting anything for the fall/winter season, I have to clean up the mess that is my summer garden.

Like most of you I've been spending a fair amount of time avoiding the heat.  This past month we've also had our fair share of rain and we all know that if you put those two things together you get a lot of something else.  Weeds.

Oh my...the weeds are insane!

I headed out and started working on the raised beds as there's not much happening in them right now.  The SVB's are back.  I pulled all the squash that was starting to die back.  I walked to the back and looked at the pumpkins.  They're goners too.  I'll pull those tomorrow.

I also pulled bermuda grass and weeds from around the beds.  I must say that I'm VERY pleased with how using cardboard as a mulch/weed blocker has worked.  So much so that's it's time to start laying down more cardboard.  I don't think I'll be buying a fabric weed block ever again!

I yanked the cucumbers and some of the tomatoes out of the raised beds.  They're really dying back now with leaf disease.  The Matts WC are still insane and since they're growing over and into the tomatoes closest to them I have to stop and let some of the plants be.

(Note the kiddie pool full of weeds and diseased plants.  Too bad they can't go into the compost.  I'll let the heat wilt them down and toss them into the trash.)

While I was upside down yanking plants and weeds, I entertained myself with the thought that I was doing "BATTLE!" just like in the movie Michael.  The weeds may not be a bull but they are just as stubborn and determined.

After a few hours I was spent, filthy and itchy with drops of sweat falling off my nose.

Enough.  I have 3 more days to do "battle" with the garden.  I think I'll head out later and see if any of the nursery's have broccoli, caulifower and cabbage plants out yet.

  1. tami - Have also spent a day doing battle - back breaking, soul-destroying work yet uplifting at the same time.

Nothing nicer than looking at the cleaned area - nothing beats that feeling of achievement LOL

  2. Hope you have good luck finding vegetable starts for the fall. Up here-they don't stock them....we have to grow our own starting in late June.
It's always such a good feeling to get an area cleaned up. Have a great weekend!

  3. I spent yesterday morning doing the same thing...but I got to feed the weeds to the chickens...it made them happy.
