What A Guy

SM was at a loss on Monday.  His suppliers were closed (Christmas Holiday) so he ended up doodling around the house instead of "working".

While his slacker wife was snoozing with a nap, look what SM did.

He started the garden expansion!  We like the double dig method around here with our hot summers.

All these clods of clay need to be exposed to the air and rain.  They'll breakdown in a month or two and then this Spring SM will cultivate it and we'll toss in some composted soil from our local source down the street to help build up the quality of the soil.

We'll have to shift the fence over to enclose the new area and add a small extension to it.  I keep going back and forth.  Sometimes I want a nicer looking picket fence with a gate, but the shorter "rabbit proof" wire fencing does a great job and all I have to do is step over it.

"Have you bought all your seeds for the year?"  SM asked.

"Probably not.  It always seems like there's something more to get."  I replied.  "I'll need to get onion sets and I also need to order the strawberry plants."  (D'ya'll have any favorite places to get those?)

We also played a game of keep away with the dogs.

I thought this pic with Casey in the sawgrass was a good one.

I played around with the photo editing on SM's new computer.  Lots of fun choices.

  1. Hi Tami
I've always gotten my strawberry plants from Nourse---they may be a bit pricier, but I've NEVER lost a plant and they have excellent customer service.
Yay on the garden expansion. We can never have enough growing space!

  2. Wow, SM, way to go! Very exciting ot expand like that. I agree about the double dig method.

I got my strawberry plants from Stark Bro's. I had some the didn't make it and they replaced them promptly and without question. I've been pleased with everything we've gotten there.

  3. Never tried the double-dig method. As we have to hook up the backhoe to dig anything around here....really. I just layer & layer & layer on wasted animal bedding, leaves, compost, etc. until there is some semblance of soil.

  4. Wow, what a great hubby you have there! One can never have enough garden space.

I would stick with the fence you have now. That way you can see and admire the garden from your house or porch.

  5. Wow! Now that's some serious work. I purchased some of my strawberry plants from Stark Brothers and then received some as a "free" gift (after spending a small fortune) from the Cooks Garden. They continue to grow like weeds. :)

  6. Love your blog!

We just expanded our beds (http://www.lettherebegarden.com/2011/11/more-gardenneed-more-garden.html) and I wondered if you had ever considered the 'no till' method. It's much easier on the back and gets around soil "issues." It sounds like you have a good source for compost as well.

I'll definitely be stopping back frequently!
