To Live And Let Die

A few days ago we had a very light frost.  We covered what we could and let some things be.  Turns out that even a light frost can set you back.

The grapes are toast.   They had just leafed out about 10 days ago.  Too tender and we did cover them so that was a bit of a surprise!

The rest of the garden survived but we had lots of "landscaped" bushes that were stung.

Crepe myrtles must be a semi-tropical.  They were hit the hardest of all.

The fruit trees did well enough and look...

I have peaches on my peach stick!

  1. Oh Tami---so sorry to see this. This darn weather!
Grapes are so very tender-did it kill the plant or just set it way back?

  2. The crape myrtles should come back. So sorry about the grapes. Your lettuce looks amazing! Enjoy those sweet peaches!

  3. Tami - I'm sure that your grapes will bounce back. Perhaps just give them a prune to remove the burnt bits?

  6. That's the problem . . . when we have a late frost, it's impossible to cover everything! Drat. Grapes must really be sensitive if you had that much damage even though they were covered. Hoping the plants themselves survive this.

What's going on here this morning? 26 degrees, snowing like the devil and strong, gusty winds. Geesh.

  7. So sorry that you had so much damage from frost :( we had frost pretty much daily the week before too and we kept everything covered up with burlap. Hope your grapes will bounce back.

  8. I think there's a decent chance the grapes will bounce back since it's so early. We moved in to this house in late March of last year and no one had done ANYTHING with the grapes in years and years, so I whacked a BUNCH of dead stuff off not long after we moved in. It was probably around this time and they did bounce back and we got some grapes. Not a ton, but some.

  9. Oh No! I'm pretty sure everything will bounce back. My avacado and loquat were nailed pretty bad by unexpected frost last year and this year...both are on the mend. I trimmed back the "frost-bite" and hoped for the best.

  13. It would be interesting to know if your grapes make a come-back; if there wasn't any fruit on them yet, I would think that they would? We're new to grapes this year so let us know how they do.

  15. We were lucky enough to be spared from the frost warning- that I and I am late getting things out early. Hopefully that was the last threat and everything else is safe from here on out.
