Doldrums

Every January and February I go through the Winter doldrums.

It's dark.

It's cold.

There's nothing to do but wait for Spring.

I never thought I'd say it but this Summer is really kicking me in the tush.

As in, I wish it'd be over and done already.

As in Fall.

When ya gonna come sweet, cool breezes?

Cause it's not soon enough for me.

I'm officially in the doldrums.  No witty, inspirational thoughts are drifting through my head.  That's why it's been so quiet here on the blog.  SM is in the doldrums too.  Heat headaches.  Afternoon naps.  Blah...

There's really not that much to say.

Oh...The tomatoes are ripening.  I've been sticking them in the freezer and I've got a huge bag of them to thaw out and sauce and can.  But do I want to blog about it?  Nah.  We've all been there done that countless times.

Scooter has caught and killed 2 rabbits this week.  Way to go old man.

The power went out for about 3 hours on a 100 degree day.  The house stayed pretty cool considering.  Man, I would NOT want to live without electricity.

That's it.

Exciting week wasn't it?  Do you see why I haven't posted anything?

Blah....

Hopefully inspiration will come back around sooner rather than later.  If not, it'll be a pretty quiet month here at 500 Dollar Tomato.

  3. Hey Tomato Thymes, I can't say for sure why she does it, but I've heard 2 reasons. First, obviously, so you can can them at a time that is convenient for you, not when the tomatoes are ready. Second, and more interestingly, once the tomatoes are frozen, a quick douse of hot water will thaw the skins but leave the tomato frozen, so it is should be easier to skin them. Or so I've heard.

  4. I was just thinking this is also one of my least favorite times of the year, garden wise. It is hot as hades but the garden needs a lot of work! Looking forward to cooler times.

  5. Summer has always been my least favorite season. I hate heat. At least in winter, you can ski and snowmobile. In heat, you SIT. Blech.
Hope you're out of the doldrums soon (meaning--cool weather for you!)

  7. TT and John...Bingo.

That's exactly why I freeze them. I'd rather have cold fingers than a hot kitchen. And most of my tomaotes HAVE been coming in slow but steady.

It's just not worth it to sauce little bits at a time. I'd rather spend a weekend (or two) working on the whole batch. The it's done!
