M is For...Mornings? Mt Dew? Manners?

Each workday morning I drive the same route and since it takes me close to an hour to make my way into Charlotte during rush hour, I try to make it as enjoyable a process as I can.

That advice came from SM who, after hearing a litany of reasons why I hated my drive time, looked at me like I was an idget and said ...

"Unless you quit your job, there's nothing you can do about it.  Do you want to spend each and every day pissed off and crabby or do you want to accept what you can't change and start to enjoy yourself?"

 Smartypants!

Since being a total crabby patty is not something I aspire to, I've tried to pay attention to what's around me and enjoy my drive time a little more.

I listen to the morning drive funnies and switch to music when the ads come on.  I look around me and admire houses and cows and construction guys and signs on trucks and bumper stickers and...Well, you get the idea.

About halfway in, I crack open my morning can of Mt Dew (diet).

Ah, Bliss!   That first sip!  Nectar of the Gods!

Drink it too soon in my drive and The Universe will guarantee that they'll be a wreck that will cause an additional delay which will cause my bladder great distress. @;)  So timing is everything.

One thing I've noticed though is that for all the jerks and idiots on the road, there's also some very kind, mannerly folks too who will pause and wave you in when you're trying to merge with on coming traffic.

I always wave a "Thank You" to them and try to be as kind to the next person whom I come across.

I'm sure that my good attitude will last until the next near death incident I experience.

Until then, Toodles!

  1. Ever try audio books? They make a drive go sooooo quickly.

An hour's commute each morning. Ish. Does it go any faster on the trip home after work?

  2. I am with you on the commute, my sistah. Mine is an hour, give or take 15 mins. I used to last until Friday before hating it. Then it was Thursday, then Wednesday - you get my drift. But that is sage advice given by your SM. I have taken to listening to cds, figuring out what I would do if I won the lottery, and trying to be mannerly. I also count the days until retirement (waaaaay too many)...

  3. But, SM was wrong, there is something else you can do about it, M ove closer.... it's all about what's important to you. I chose to work in an office that was a 20 minute drive rather than a 5 minute walk because I liked the people I'd work with better and figured the client pool was bigger.

    1. Yeah, but then I'd be IN the city. Eeek! I'd rather have the commute!
